| WHAT IS SAFE DRIVING? DEFENSIVE DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAM It seems to me that when people are discussing the subject of safe driving, they are not always on the same wavelength. For example, I have been a passenger in a car when everyone was talking about tailgaters, and the driver readily agreed how much he hated tail- gaters also, yet he was following dangerously close to the vehicle in front! Or, someone will say to me "oh, so and so is a very safe driver, he doesn't go over the speed limit, always follows the rules of the road, is courteous... Okay, that's all good stuff, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the person is a safe driver. Some components of safe driving: * The desire to make safe driving a top priority * Keeping your vehicle in top mechanical condition * Keeping yourself in a well rested, alert condition * Obeying the law * Avoiding distractions such as eating, talking on the phone... More components: * Adjusting your speed for conditions. (road, traffic, weather) * Knowing and using good seeing habits * Understanding how much space you need for your vehicle * Always keeping a large space cushion * Not over-driving your skill level * Understanding the distance required to stop a vehicle * Spotting problems and hazards well in advance * Knowing how to deal with various problems and hazards * Understanding and using good glance behavior * Assuming nothing * Making yourself as visible as possible The above is discussed in my driving safety course "Learn To Drive And Survive" which can be found by clicking here If I had to simplify the concept of safe driving, and sum it up in two words, it would be SPACE and VISIBILITY. These are the two things you need to constantly be striving for - space for your vehicle, and to see and be seen. If you could do just these two things well most of the time, I would say that you are an above average driver, and your risk of a collision would be less than the typical driver. However, the subject of space and visibility cover a lot of ground. What I mean by that is, in a defensive driver course such as my ebook "Learn To Drive And Survive", many pages are devoted to these concepts, so they are more involved than they seem.
