                                DRIVING STYLE

                           DRIVER EDUCATION ONLINE CLASS

Starting now, or just after you pass your road test, you will need to decide your driving style. If you are lacking in confidence, more training and/or more time behind the wheel is probably needed, in  order to boost your confidence. With my defensive driver course you will learn all about safe, defensive driving. click here

If you have the average amount of confidence then you can most likely strike a good balance in your driving - not too slow and over-cautious, and not overconfident. Still, you will have to decide on your driving style, which we will discuss shortly.

If you are overconfident you may have an inclination to indulge in risky driving because of your overconfidence, and your driving skills may not be as good as you think. In that case, just like the driver who lacks confidence, you may need more training and practice also.

Your driving style is a conscious decision you make about what kind of driver you want to be. Do you want to be as safe a driver and as courteous as you can be? Do you also want to enhance the safety of other road users when possible? Do you want to be law-abiding?

Or, do you not much care about the rules of the road, other drivers' safety, courtesy, and so on as long as you're having a good time behind the wheel?  You may decide that you prefer the thrills of taking risks such as driving at speeds well over the limit, weaving fast through traffic and cutting in close etc.

Well, I was going to say "that's your business"  but no, it's not. It's my business too, because you're endangering my life. There are places for high speeds and thrills, such as race tracks and roller coasters.

Because this is my website, and my article, I am going to indulge myself, and tell the "race car drivers" who race each other on city streets, or simply drive very fast on city streets, what I think of them.

First of all, I have been a driving instructor for over 17 years. I am also a big Formula 1 car racing fan, and a frustrated race car driver. But I don't race on city streets, I race on race tracks.

I would like to know what talent or skill is required to go fast in a straight line. There is none that I know of. I'm quite convinced a ten year old could do it with five minutes of instruction, yet some of these "race car drivers" manage to stuff their car into a telephone pole while going in a straight line. If they ever wanted to go fast around a curve they would end up in a cow pasture for sure.

To help identify your driving style, ask someone you trust to give you feedback on your driving skills and driving style.

If you have a close call, analyze it and figure out what happened so you will be able avoid it in the future.

Do you find yourself always blaming others, or could it be you?

If you experience peer pressure when you drive, realize there are two types: positive and negative. Do you have friends who encourage you to drive safely, or friends who encourage you to take chances, speed, etc?

Peer pressure can be difficult to deal with, and takes practice. However, as the driver you're responsible for everyone's safety. It would take courage to tell people to please be quiet while you're driving, or stop goading you into risky behavior, or even to ask them to get out of the car.

What kind of driver do you want to be?
